Punjab’s provincial administration has announced the closure of schools in several districts after floodwaters from major rivers threatened lives and property. The decision was made to ensure the safety of children, teachers, and school staff as heavy rains continue to raise water levels across the region.
Officials confirmed that both government and private schools in Sialkot, Narowal, Gujrat, and Pasrur will remain closed until further notice. The announcement came after rivers Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej reached dangerous levels, prompting urgent warnings from the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
In recent days, floodwaters have forced thousands of families to leave their homes. NDMA reported that more than 190,000 people have already been evacuated from low-lying areas in Punjab. Emergency rescue teams remain active, and operations are underway to move more residents to safe shelters.
District administrations have also suspended all school activities, including exams, sports, and cultural events. Authorities said the closures were necessary to prevent students from facing any danger during travel or at school premises.
Meanwhile, in Gujrat and surrounding areas, disruptions to mobile phone and internet services have made communication difficult.
Local officials visited flood control points, including Head Marala, to monitor the situation and oversee rescue operations. In one instance, 20 people trapped near Shahbazpur Bridge were successfully saved by emergency teams.
Residents have been urged to avoid unnecessary movement, stay away from rivers, and follow safety instructions issued by the government. With rain forecasts still uncertain, Punjab officials say schools will only reopen once the flood situation improves.
