Noman Ali breaks 37-year-old record of Abdul Qadir in Lahore Test

Pakistan’s experienced spinner, Noman Ali, made history by breaking a 37-year-old record once held by the legendary Abdul Qadir. His remarkable performance came during Pakistan’s 93-run victory over South Africa in the opening Test at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old spinner played a key role as Pakistan successfully defended their target of 277 runs, bowling out South Africa for just 183 in their second innings. Noman shared the spotlight with fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi, who supported him with speed and swing. Together, they took eight wickets in the second innings, while Noman’s six wickets in the first innings helped him secure his third ten-wicket haul in Test cricket.

With this performance, Noman reached an incredible milestone — 46 wickets in his last five Test matches, surpassing Abdul Qadir’s record of 44 wickets achieved between his 48th and 52nd Tests during the 1987–88 season. This makes Noman the most successful Pakistani bowler over such a short span in nearly four decades.

Over the past 12 months, Noman has also been the most successful spinner in world cricket. His recent performances include 10 wickets against South Africa in Lahore, 16 wickets in the two-match series against the West Indies earlier this year, and 20 wickets against England during the home series — 11 in Multan and 9 in Rawalpindi.

This consistency and dominance underline Noman Ali’s transformation into Pakistan’s most reliable spinner in Test cricket. His efforts have not only strengthened Pakistan’s bowling attack but also helped the team gain a 1–0 lead in the two-match series against South Africa.

The second and final Test will be played in Rawalpindi from October 20 to 24, where Pakistan will aim to secure a clean sweep and continue their strong run in the World Test Championship.
