Saudi Arabia Reportedly Rejects Messi’s Offer to Play in Saudi Pro League

Saudi Arabia has reportedly turned down an offer from football superstar Lionel Messi to play in the Saudi Pro League during the MLS off-season.

According to reports, Messi’s representatives had approached Abdullah Hammad, the CEO of Mahd Sports Academy, during the last Club World Cup with a proposal for a short-term deal. The idea was to allow Messi to maintain his fitness and form ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Hammad forwarded the offer to the country’s Minister of Sports for consideration. However, the proposal was rejected, with the Ministry stating that the Saudi Pro League is not meant to be used as a training ground for players preparing for other tournaments.

Messi, who moved from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Inter Miami in 2023, has since become one of the most influential players in Major League Soccer and extended his contract with the club until 2028.

The situation has sparked comparisons with Cristiano Ronaldo, who joined Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr in 2022 and became a key figure in promoting the league’s global visibility. While Ronaldo embraced the Saudi football scene, Messi chose to continue his journey in the United States, focusing on both his club career and preparations for the upcoming World Cup.
