Lahore and Karachi Rank Among World’s Most Polluted Cities Amid Heavy Smog

Pakistan’s two biggest cities, Lahore and Karachi, are once again among the most polluted cities in the world, as thick smog covers large parts of both urban areas.

Recent air quality reports show that pollution levels have reached dangerous limits, making the air unsafe to breathe. Lahore has topped the global pollution charts, while Karachi is also struggling with severe air contamination. The heavy smog has made visibility poor and created serious health risks for millions of residents.

Doctors and health experts have warned that respiratory problems such as asthma, cough, throat irritation, and eye infections are increasing quickly.

They have advised people especially children and the elderly, to avoid outdoor activities, wear protective masks, and keep windows closed to reduce exposure to polluted air.

In response to the worsening situation, authorities have started emergency actions. These include limiting industrial operations, controlling vehicle emissions, and discouraging open burning of garbage and crop residue. Schools in some areas may also close temporarily if pollution levels continue to rise.

Environmentalists say that these short-term steps are not enough. They stress the importance of long-term solutions, such as promoting public transport, improving waste management, increasing green spaces and enforcing stricter air quality laws.

Experts believe that without serious and consistent efforts, Pakistan’s air pollution crisis will keep getting worse each winter. They call for greater public awareness and cooperation to protect both the environment and public health for future generations.
