‘We are Providing Constitutional Protection to Rank of Field Marshal’, Bilawal Bhutto

Pakistan’s National Assembly recently discussed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill, which introduces several important changes to the country’s constitution.

Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party, explained the key features of this amendment before lawmakers voted on it. He stated that the bill aims to fulfill promises made in the Charter of Democracy, a historic agreement between major political parties.

One of the main provisions of the amendment is the establishment of constitutional courts. These specialized courts will handle cases related to constitutional matters, helping to streamline the judicial process in Pakistan.

The amendment also provides constitutional protection for the rank of Field Marshal under Article 243. This military rank holds special significance in Pakistan’s history. According to Bilawal, this protection follows a decision made by the prime minister after Pakistan’s victory over India in a past conflict.

Furthermore, the bill introduces changes affecting Pakistan’s defense institutions, though specific details were not elaborated during the discussion.

Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar presented the bill in the National Assembly. The session was attended by prominent political figures, including Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, showing the importance given to this constitutional amendment.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment represents a significant step in Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its legal and institutional framework. If passed, it will mark another chapter in the country’s constitutional evolution, affecting both the judiciary and military establishments.
