Karachi Traffic Police has made a clear announcement: female pillion riders on motorcycles must now wear helmets, just like the riders themselves.
DSP Traffic East Kashif Nadeem said, “Men and women are equal in the eyes of law and their lives are equally precious. There will be no relaxation for anyone.”
The rule is already being enforced across the city. Police officers are stopping bikes without two helmets and issuing e-challans through the electronic ticketing system. The fine for not wearing a helmet is Rs 500, and repeated violations can result in higher penalties or even impounding of the bike.
DSP Nadeem explained that most motorcycle accident deaths happen because of head injuries. “Many families lose mothers, sisters, and daughters just because they were sitting at the back without protection,” he added. He urged husbands, brothers, and fathers to buy proper helmets for women in their families.
Female riders and passengers welcomed the decision. “Safety should not depend on gender,” said Ayesha Khan, a university student who travels daily on a bike. Shopkeepers report a sudden surge in demand for ladies’ helmets, with prices starting from Rs 1,500.
Traffic police have started awareness drives in markets and colleges, distributing pamphlets and showing accident videos to highlight the importance of double helmets.
Karachi roads will now see both rider and pillion protected, a small change that can save thousands of lives every year.
