Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has instructed officials to speed up the privatisation process PIA while making it clear that the airline’s name, identity and branding will not be changed after the sale. He issued these directions during a detailed review meeting on the current status of the national carrier.
The prime minister stressed that the entire process must be completed quickly, transparently, and according to international standards. He also asked the authorities to work on improving PIA’s operations in the meantime by increasing the number of usable aircraft and ensuring that flight schedules remain consistent and punctual.
During the briefing, officials informed him that four bidders have now been shortlisted for the next stage. Under the current plan, 75 percent of PIA’s shares will be sold to a private investor, but with strict conditions to protect the airline’s brand, history, and national identity.
The government’s long-term vision includes expanding PIA’s fleet from the present 18 aircraft to 38 aircraft by the year 2029. This expansion is expected to help the airline increase its international and domestic routes, improve service quality, and become financially stronger.
The prime minister said that restructuring PIA is an important step toward stabilizing the aviation sector and reducing the financial burden on the national budget. He added that successful privatisation will allow PIA to operate more efficiently and compete with global airlines.
With these new directions, the government aims to complete the privatisation process soon and support PIA in becoming a modern, reliable, and competitive airline for Pakistani travelers.
