The DIG Traffic Karachi has announced that the city will soon begin using both ground scanners and drones to monitor traffic violations. This new system will help traffic police identify vehicles parked in No Parking areas and issue e-challans automatically.
According to officials, the goal is to reduce traffic congestion and ensure smoother movement on busy roads by discouraging illegal parking.
The technology will allow scanners placed on the ground and drones flying overhead to capture the number plates of vehicles that break parking rules.
Once a violation is detected, the system will automatically send an e-challan to the vehicle owner. Authorities believe that using modern technology will make the process faster, more accurate, and less dependent on manual checks.
So far, more than 23,000 citizens have visited the e-ticketing facilitation centers set up across Karachi. These centers help people check and pay their fines, update vehicle information, and understand how the new system works. Through these centers, the city has already collected around Rs25 million in fines, showing that many drivers are responding to the new enforcement measures.
Officials also shared that the e-challan system will be expanded to other districts soon. However, this will only happen once the staff in those districts complete their training and the required centers are fully established. The authorities want to ensure that the system operates smoothly when it is introduced in new areas.
The traffic police believe that using drones and scanners will improve traffic discipline, reduce road blockages, and create safer conditions for drivers and pedestrians.
They also expect that the automated system will minimize arguments on the road, as the evidence will be recorded digitally and processed without human interference.
