WaterGenix: Pakistan’s Innovative Clean Energy Solution Tackling Water Scarcity

A homegrown startup from Rawalpindi is redefining how communities access clean water while addressing one of Pakistan’s most urgent challenges. WaterGenix, founded by Muhammad Shahwaiz Akram and recognized as the Runner-up in Tameer Awards’s Clean Energy Solution category, is developing Superhydrophilic Photothermic Nanocapsules (SPHN) for atmospheric water harvesting (AWH). This innovative technology captures water from the air, even in low humidity, and releases it using only natural sunlight, offering a sustainable, eco-friendly, and accessible solution for households, communities, and vulnerable populations.

At the core of WaterGenix’s breakthrough are the SPHN nanocapsules—microscopic, high-efficiency “sponges.” Unlike conventional fog nets, which require high humidity, or energy-intensive desalination systems, these nanocapsules can absorb 3–5 times their dry weight in water and release it within 30 minutes using sunlight alone. This makes the system highly portable, modular, and reusable, enabling integration into household water devices, agricultural irrigation units, and disaster-relief kits, ensuring reliable access to clean water in diverse settings.

WaterGenix bridges the gap between advanced lab research and real-world water needs. Bycombining nanotechnology and photothermal principles, the solution reduces dependence on borewells and energy-intensive desalination, providing safe water for drinking, sanitation, and irrigation.

The technology directly impacts over 70 million people living in water-stressed regions across Pakistan by providing a dependable source of clean water for drinking, sanitation, and irrigation. Beyond immediate access, it strengthens climate-resilient agriculture, reduces reliance on energy-intensive water systems, and supports environmentally responsible practices.

WaterGenix’s journey has been significantly supported by Tameer, Wafi Energy’s flagship initiative that empowers high-potential startups addressing critical national challenges. Recognition as the Runner-up at the 12th Tameer Awards underscores the startup’s innovation, scalability, and social impact. By turning thin air into a reliable source of clean water, WaterGenix exemplifies how science-driven innovation and clean energy solutionscan transform lives, empower communities, and build a water-secure future for Pakistan.
