Pakistan Secures $705 Million Financing for Long Delayed Sukkur–Hyderabad M-6 Motorway

Pakistan’s long-delayed Sukkur–Hyderabad M-6 Motorway project has received a significant boost, with $705 million in foreign financing now available to support the long-awaited infrastructure development. The latest progress has renewed hopes that construction could begin within the coming months, although an official start date has not yet been confirmed.

Spanning approximately 306 kilometres, the M-6 Motorway is planned to connect Sukkur with Hyderabad in Sindh. Once completed, it will fill a major gap in Pakistan’s north-south motorway network, strengthening road connectivity between Karachi and other parts of the country.

The project is also expected to make long-distance travel more convenient for commuters, transport operators and businesses that depend on road transportation.

The motorway is considered an important part of Pakistan’s broader transport infrastructure, as it could improve the movement of goods and passengers between southern and northern regions.

Better connectivity may also support commercial activities, reduce travel difficulties and improve access to markets along the route. However, the actual benefits will depend on the project’s timely completion and the quality of its implementation.

According to the current project timeline, Sections I and II are being processed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model.

Under this arrangement, the government aims to involve private-sector partners in delivering the infrastructure project. Officials are targeting February 2027 for the award of the concession, which represents an important step towards moving the project forward.

Despite the availability of foreign financing, several key milestones remain before construction can officially begin.

The concession process, project arrangements and other required formalities will need to progress according to schedule. While the latest development has raised expectations for the M-6 Motorway, its construction start date remains unconfirmed.

For residents, travellers and businesses in Sindh, the motorway represents a long-awaited opportunity to improve regional connectivity.

If the project moves ahead as planned, it could become a significant addition to Pakistan’s motorway network and help strengthen links between Karachi and the rest of the country.
