Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced on Friday that all Basant-related events planned for Saturday have been cancelled following the deadly bombing in Islamabad that resulted in multiple casualties. The decision was taken as a mark of respect for the victims and in response to the tragic situation in the country.
In a statement shared on social media platform X, Maryam Nawaz confirmed that the main Basant event scheduled to take place at Liberty Square in Lahore would not be held. She referred to the incident as the “Islamabad tragedy” and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives.
The Chief Minister said that this was not a time for celebration but a moment for the nation to come together in grief and solidarity. She emphasized that public events should be paused so that people can stand united with the families affected by the attack.
Maryam Nawaz also urged citizens to show national unity and support Pakistan’s armed forces in their fight against terrorism. She said that terrorism is a threat to peace, stability, and humanity, and it can only be defeated through collective resolve and cooperation.
She added that the government stands firmly with security forces and law enforcement agencies who are working tirelessly to protect the country. The Chief Minister called on the public to remain calm, responsible, and united during this difficult time.
The cancellation of Basant events reflects the government’s decision to prioritize national mourning over festivities. Authorities said that further decisions regarding public gatherings will be made based on the security situation.
The announcement has been widely shared, with many people supporting the move and expressing solidarity with the victims and their families.
