NY Mayor Mamdani Shares Prophet Muhammad (SAW)’s Journey of Migration and Quranic References During NYC Sanctuary Debate

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani spoke at a multi-faith gathering where he highlighted Islamic teachings to explain the moral importance of migration.

During his speech, he referred to the Hijrah, the historic journey of Prophet Muhammad from Mecca to Medina. He used this example to show that migration is not just a political issue but a shared human responsibility rooted in compassion and care for others.

The mayor explained that the Hijrah represents protection, dignity, and support for people who are forced to leave their homes due to persecution or hardship.

He said that many religious traditions teach similar values, including helping the vulnerable and standing up for justice. By referencing these teachings, he urged people to show empathy toward migrants and refugees who are seeking safety and a better life.

During the same event, Mayor Mamdani also announced a new executive order aimed at strengthening New York City’s protections against abusive immigration enforcement practices.

He said the order would reinforce existing safeguards and ensure that city agencies continue to follow local laws designed to protect immigrants.

The mayor made it clear that New York City remains committed to being a safe place for immigrants and all residents, regardless of their background or status. He stressed that no one should live in fear while accessing basic services or participating in city life.

City officials said the executive order reaffirms New York’s long-standing policies that limit cooperation with harmful enforcement actions. The move was welcomed by community leaders and immigrant rights groups, who said it sends a strong message of inclusion.

Mayor Mamdani concluded by calling on residents to stand together, protect one another, and uphold values of kindness, justice, and unity in challenging times.
