First Robotic Surgeries To Be Launched at Institute of Kidney in KP

The Institute of Kidney Diseases (IKD) at Hayatabad Medical Complex, Peshawar, is preparing to introduce robotic surgery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for the first time, marking a major advancement in the province’s healthcare system. This milestone reflects IKD’s commitment to adopting modern medical technologies aimed at improving patient care and surgical outcomes.

To showcase this innovation, a live hands-on workshop was recently organized in which UK-based surgeons performed two robotic-assisted surgical procedures. The sessions introduced participants to Robot-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgery (RAMIS), allowing local surgeons, trainees, and medical staff to observe the technology in real time and understand its clinical benefits.

Robotic surgery enables surgeons to operate with exceptional accuracy using robotic arms controlled from a console, supported by a high-definition 3D camera. This advanced approach significantly enhances precision, reduces human error, and offers greater control during complex procedures. As a result, patients experience less blood loss, lower risk of infection, minimal scarring, reduced postoperative pain, and faster recovery times compared to conventional surgery.

IKD has also announced plans to provide specialized training to its doctors, surgeons, and technical staff to ensure the effective and safe use of this technology. The institute is seeking government support to acquire the robotic surgical system, which is estimated to cost around $1 million. Once acquired, the facility aims to establish itself as a leading center for robotic-assisted procedures in the region.

Initially, robotic surgery will be used for complex and high-risk cases, particularly in urology and kidney-related treatments. Over time, IKD plans to expand its use across a wider range of surgical procedures, making advanced care accessible to more patients. This initiative is expected to significantly improve patient outcomes, enhance surgical efficiency, and set a new benchmark for modern healthcare services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
