Now Marriage Under 18 will Get 2 Years Jail & Rs. 500,000 Lac Fine

The Punjab government is preparing a new law to stop child marriages by strictly banning marriages involving anyone under the age of 18.

Under the proposed ordinance, any adult who marries a minor could face at least two years in prison along with a fine of up to Rs. 500,000. Parents or guardians who help arrange or allow such marriages may face up to three years in jail.

The draft law also treats living with a minor as a husband or wife, or having a marital relationship with them, as child abuse. This offense could result in five to seven years of imprisonment and a minimum fine of Rs1 million.

Authorities have made it clear that these cases will be handled seriously. All trials will take place in sessions courts, and decisions must be given within 90 days to ensure quick justice.

This step brings Punjab in line with federal laws and existing regulations in Sindh, where 18 years is already set as the minimum legal age for marriage. The ordinance also prohibits Nikah registrars from conducting marriages if either person is underage. Strict action can be taken against those who ignore this rule.

The government says the purpose of this law is to protect children from exploitation, forced marriages, and early responsibilities that can harm their health and education.

Officials have also emphasized that people who report violations will receive legal protection. The new ordinance reflects a strong commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and promoting a safer future for young girls and boys across Punjab.
