Govt Announces Free Public Transport for 1 Month in Islamabad

Pakistan’s federal government has announced free public transport for all residents of Islamabad for the next 30 days. Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced on Friday, saying the decision came directly from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The relief will start from Saturday, April 4, 2026.

During this one month, people in the capital will not have to pay fares on government-operated buses, including the Metro Bus Service, electric buses, feeder routes, and other public transport options.

The move aims to ease the heavy burden on citizens after the recent sharp increase in petrol and diesel prices, which reached record highs this week.

The Interior Ministry will fully cover the cost of this relief package, estimated at Rs350 million. Officials hope the free rides will encourage more people to use public transport instead of private vehicles.

This will help reduce traffic congestion and lower daily travel expenses for students, workers, and low-income families.

The announcement comes as fuel prices have badly affected purchasing power across Pakistan. Similar relief steps have also been taken in Punjab. Many citizens welcomed the decision, calling it timely support during tough economic times.

However, experts say such short-term relief should be paired with long-term solutions like better fuel efficiency, expanded public transport, and stronger economic reforms.

For now, Islamabad residents can enjoy free travel on public buses for the full month.
