Punjab Information Minister Azma Bukhari has criticized the public for increasing fuel consumption despite rising petrol prices and ongoing economic challenges.
Speaking about the situation, she said that people are not adjusting their behavior according to the country’s financial conditions. Petrol prices in Pakistan have seen repeated hikes in recent months due to global oil trends and currency pressure. These increases have made fuel more expensive for households already facing inflation.
Bukhari pointed out that recent holidays were planned to reduce travel and save fuel. However, instead of limiting movement, many citizens used the time for outings and unnecessary trips. She said this trend is putting extra pressure on national resources and worsening the economic situation.
According to government data, fuel demand in Pakistan often rises during holidays and weekends. This leads to higher imports and puts stress on foreign exchange reserves. Experts say that reducing fuel use through carpooling, public transport, and careful planning can help manage costs at both personal and national levels.
The minister urged citizens to act responsibly and understand the wider impact of their choices. She stressed that small changes in daily habits can make a difference in controlling fuel demand.
Her remarks have sparked debate, with some agreeing on the need for public awareness, while others say structural issues also need attention.
