Iran Officially Replaces UAE With Pakistan Shipping Route for Most Imports

Iran is making a big change in how it brings in goods. It is shifting a large part of its trade from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Pakistan. New transit rules now let goods move through Pakistani ports and roads to reach Iran.

Pakistan’s Ministry of Commerce has allowed third-country goods to pass through its land. The main routes use ports like Gwadar, Karachi, and Port Qasim. From there, trucks carry the cargo to Iranian border points at Gabd (near Gwadar) and Taftan. These roads go through areas such as Turbat, Quetta, and Dalbandin in Balochistan. The shortest path from Gwadar to Gabd takes only two to three hours.

This move comes at a time when shipping through the Strait of Hormuz faces problems due to tensions. Many containers were stuck at Pakistani ports. The new land corridor helps clear the backlog and provides a safer, faster option for Iran. It can also cut transport costs.

Both countries see this as a step to boost trade and connectivity. It revives old agreements and gives a bigger role to Gwadar port. Officials believe stronger links will help economic ties and regional cooperation.

For Pakistan, it brings more business to its ports and transport sector. For Iran, it ensures a steady supply of imports even when sea routes are difficult. This development could open new doors for trade in the region.
