The federal government of Pakistan has announced plans to significantly expand EV charging infrastructure across the country in order to support the growing shift toward clean transportation.
Under the new plan, authorities aim to install 40 Level-3 fast charging stations along major motorways and the N-5 highway. These charging points will be placed at intervals of around 120 kilometers to make long-distance travel easier for electric vehicle users.
According to official documents, the broader national strategy includes the development of a large network of charging facilities. This plan features 1,050 fast chargers, 750 Level-2 chargers, and 600 Level-1 chargers across different cities and highways.
In addition, 600 battery-swapping stations are also planned to support faster energy replacement for electric vehicles.
Officials say these facilities will help reduce “range anxiety,” which is the fear that electric vehicles may run out of charge during long journeys. The new infrastructure is expected to make EV travel more practical and reliable for both private users and commercial transport.
The government also plans to encourage investment in the sector through a public-private partnership model. This approach will allow private companies to work with the government in building and operating charging stations across the country.
Authorities have set a long-term target of establishing around 3,000 charging stations nationwide by 2030. This expansion is part of efforts to promote electric vehicle adoption, reduce fuel dependency, and support environmental sustainability.
Experts believe that improved charging infrastructure will play a key role in increasing EV usage in Pakistan, especially as global trends shift toward cleaner and more energy-efficient transportation systems.
