Can Chinese water-saving tech fix Pakistan’s struggling agriculture?

China’s water-saving irrigation tech has proven successful in Pakistan for nearly 20 years. Trials in Punjab and Sindh show dramatic gains: 50% less water use, doubled maize yields, and drought-proof harvests.

But scaling stalls. Unreliable power and water supplies, plus negligible government subsidies, put the tech out of reach for most Pakistani smallholders.

As one Pakistani agricultural scientist noted, China generously subsidizes farmers to adopt modern irrigation systems, while Pakistan offers almost no fiscal support.

Xinjiang — with similar climate and soil to Pakistan — became one of China’s highest-yield regions with drip irrigation starting in the 1990s. Pakistan can definitely replicate this success.

Now 2025–2029 China-Pakistan action plan and CPEC 2.0 prioritize drip irrigation capacity building. For a country facing water scarcity and food insecurity, the window is open.

Imported technology helps, but Pakistan’s own policies and investments will shape its agricultural fate.
