Pakistani Ex-Police Officer Creates Handmade Quran with Thread and Thousands of Pencils

A retired police officer from Sindh has created an extraordinary piece of art that has captured the attention of people across Pakistan and beyond. Khan Shahnawaz Malhi spent nearly 10 years hand-knitting the entire Holy Quran using only thread and thousands of pencils in a unique artistic style.

Malhi, a former inspector and Station House Officer (SHO) who retired in 2014, invented this special weaving technique himself. He used around 8,000 pencils to weave all 114 chapters and 6,236 verses of the Holy Quran. Each pencil is carefully wrapped with thread to form beautiful Arabic calligraphy.

Completing this massive project required up to 8 hours of hard work every day for an entire decade. The effort was supported by around Rs 3 million in donations from his family and friends. Malhi showed such deep dedication that he even sold his house and moved into a smaller one so he could use the remaining money to complete the project.

What started as a personal passion project turned into a remarkable achievement. Malhi learned the basic weaving technique and spent a full decade working patiently to complete the Holy Book. The unique handmade Quran has been displayed at the National Museum of Pakistan in Karachi, where it has received huge admiration from visitors.

This extraordinary artwork not only highlights Malhi’s deep love for the Holy Quran but also showcases the incredible talent and devotion that exists in Pakistan.
