Punjab Expands Liquid Tree Project to Tackle Urban Pollution

The Punjab government has decided to expand its innovative Liquid Tree project to make cities cleaner and fight air pollution. This science-based solution uses microalgae to absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen, especially in places where normal trees cannot grow easily.

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz announced that Pakistan’s first EPA-certified Liquid Tree will be moved from Faisalabad to Lahore. The project is led by the Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In the first phase, these liquid trees will be installed in shopping malls and other indoor and outdoor public spaces.

CM Maryam Nawaz said more than 100 species of microalgae were collected from across Pakistan, from Karachi to Khyber, for research. The selected strains work very well to clean the air. She called the Liquid Tree a “scientific and effective solution” to reduce smog and rising carbon dioxide levels in big cities.

This initiative is part of Punjab’s broader green efforts. In 2025, the province saw a big drop in smog and recorded major improvements in air quality. Lahore’s Air Quality Index got better for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic. Punjab also achieved a 33.2% reduction in particulate matter.

Officials say the project demonstrates the government’s focus on modern technology to achieve a cleaner, healthier environment. The successful trial will lead to wider use across the province.
