Trout Farming Project Worth Rs. 50 Million Launched in Gilgit-Baltistan

The government of Pakistan has started a new Rs. 50 million trout farming project in District Ghizer, Gilgit-Baltistan. This important initiative aims to boost aquaculture, create jobs, and help local people earn more money. It will also strengthen the cold-water fish industry in the mountainous region.

Gilgit-Baltistan has clean, cold waters from glaciers that are perfect for raising trout. Rainbow and brown trout have been grown here for many years. Trout farming started in the early 1900s and has become one of the fastest-growing sectors in the area. Farmers use natural cold streams, which give high-quality fish.

The new project will provide modern techniques, better breeding facilities, and training to farmers. It will increase production and help build strong supply chains so fresh trout can reach markets across Pakistan. This will improve food security and reduce pressure on wild trout populations, which are declining because of climate change, overfishing, and floods.

Officials say the project will open new income opportunities for rural communities. Trout farming needs low investment but gives good profits. Studies show it can be a major source of earnings in northern areas with proper support and markets.

This step supports local economy and promotes sustainable fishing. With better facilities, more people can benefit from this healthy protein source while protecting nature.
