The Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan has taken a big step to prepare students for the future. It has approved a mandatory three-credit-hour “Introduction to Artificial Intelligence” course for all undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs at public and private universities nationwide.
This course will start from the Fall 2026 academic session. HEC sent a formal letter to vice-chancellors and heads of higher education institutions, calling AI education an essential requirement, not an option. Universities must add the course to their programs without delay.
The course will teach basic AI concepts, real-world applications, and important ethical considerations. Students will learn how AI is changing industries, education, healthcare, business, and daily life. It does not require prior programming knowledge, making it suitable for students from all fields.
Pakistan is focusing more on emerging technologies. By making AI education mandatory, HEC aims to build strong digital skills nationwide. This move will help graduates compete in the global job market and support innovation in the country. Experts see it as a smart step toward a technology-driven future.
This decision shows Pakistan’s commitment to modernizing higher education. Students will gain practical knowledge applicable to many careers. As AI continues to grow, this foundational course will ensure young Pakistanis are ready for new opportunities and challenges.
