Punjab Plans to Launch 5,000 Electric Buses Within 5 Years

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced an ambitious plan to introduce 5,000 electric buses across the province over the next five years as part of a major initiative to modernise the public transport system and promote environmentally friendly travel.

According to the provincial government, the first phase of the project will see 1,500 electric buses deployed across 91 tehsils, significantly improving access to safe, affordable, and reliable public transportation for residents in both urban and smaller districts.

Authorities have confirmed that 189 electric buses are already ready for launch, while another 488 buses are expected to arrive from China later this month to support the expansion of the fleet.

The Punjab government has also started assembling electric buses locally, a move aimed at strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity, creating employment opportunities, and reducing dependence on imported vehicles.

Officials say the project is designed to provide cleaner and more energy-efficient transport, reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions, and offer commuters a modern, comfortable, and sustainable travel experience throughout the province.
