Millions of Rupees Reportedly Stolen from Data Darbar Donation Box

A theft of Rs. 1.25 crore from donation boxes at Lahore’s Data Darbar shrine has been uncovered, prompting disciplinary action against officials and renewed efforts to improve transparency within the Auqaf Department.

According to officials, two managers have been demoted following the discovery of the missing funds. The case has also led to further action against corruption as authorities continue their investigation into the incident.

Officials say strict accountability measures are being taken to protect public donations and ensure proper management of shrine funds.

Punjab Minister for Auqaf and Religious Affairs Chaudhry Shafi Hussain said that donations made by the public are a sacred trust and must be handled with complete honesty and responsibility. He emphasized that anyone found involved in corruption or misuse of public money will face strict action under the law.

To reduce the risk of future theft and improve transparency, the Punjab government has announced plans to digitise donation collection boxes at shrines across the province. The new digital system is expected to improve monitoring, strengthen financial management, and make the collection process more secure and accountable.

Officials also highlighted previous disciplinary action taken under the PEEDA Act to address corruption within the department. Earlier investigations resulted in the recovery of more than Rs20 million, while several officials faced dismissals, demotions, and permanent bans from government service.

The government says these measures reflect its commitment to improving governance and protecting public funds. Authorities believe stronger monitoring systems and stricter accountability will help prevent similar incidents in the future.

The investigation into the Data Darbar case is continuing, and officials have said that further action will be taken if additional evidence emerges.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring transparency, safeguarding donations, and maintaining public trust in the management of religious institutions.
