Suzuki Alto to Get Cheaper? Pakistan Proposes 5.5% Sales Tax Cut on Upto 800cc Cars

The federal government of Pakistan is discussing an important tax change with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). It wants to reduce the sales tax on locally made cars with engines up to 800cc from 18% to 12.5%. This means a 5.5 percentage point cut.

If the proposal is approved, popular entry-level cars like the Suzuki Alto could become more affordable. Many middle-class families in Pakistan dream of buying their first car, and lower prices would help more people own one. The Suzuki Alto is one of the cheapest and most fuel-efficient cars in the market.

This change is part of the upcoming Auto Policy, expected to be announced in August. The new policy aims to support local car manufacturing, attract new investments, and create more jobs in the auto industry. It also focuses on improving vehicle safety standards and encouraging electric and hybrid vehicles for a cleaner environment.

The government believes lower taxes on small cars will boost sales and help the economy. However, the IMF had some concerns at first, and talks are still going on. Final decisions will depend on these discussions.
