Pakistan to Introduce AI Education and Establish AI Labs in Primary Schools

Punjab is taking a major step toward modernizing education by introducing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a subject for primary school students up to Grade 5. The initiative aims to prepare young learners with digital skills and introduce them to new technologies at an early age.

The Punjab Curriculum and Textbook Board has approved the plan, which includes developing a dedicated AI curriculum for children. In the first phase, students will learn basic AI concepts through classroom lessons. The program will later expand with the establishment of AI laboratories in primary schools across the province, allowing students to gain practical experience with technology.

Since most government school teachers currently lack specialized AI training, the Punjab government plans to hire qualified educators and experts to teach the subject. This will help ensure that students receive proper guidance and understand AI concepts effectively.

Officials have also prepared an alternative plan in case of budget limitations. Instead of creating separate AI books, basic AI topics may be added to existing science textbooks.

The program is expected to receive final approval soon and will be implemented across Punjab from the 2027 academic year. Through this initiative, the government aims to improve digital literacy, encourage creativity, and help students develop skills needed for future careers in science and technology. This move could also strengthen Pakistan’s position in technology education.
