MDCAT Registrations Drop from 200,000+ to 135,000

MDCAT registrations have witnessed a steady decline over the past five years, highlighting a noticeable shift in the number of students applying for admission to medical and dental colleges across Pakistan. Registrations, which exceeded 204,000 in 2022, have dropped to more than 135,000 so far in 2026.

While authorities have extended the registration deadline, meaning the final number of applicants is expected to increase, the overall downward trend remains evident when compared with previous years.

The figures have drawn attention from educators, students, and policymakers, raising questions about the changing landscape of medical education in the country.

The decline has fueled discussions over several possible factors, including increasing competition, changing admission policies, the growing cost of medical education, and the availability of alternative academic and career pathways.

Many believe these trends reflect evolving priorities among students, while others point to the challenges associated with securing admission to medical institutions.

As registrations continue, the final numbers will provide a clearer picture of this year’s applicant pool. However, the broader trend suggests that interest in pursuing medical education is changing, prompting renewed debate about the future of medical admissions and the factors influencing students’ career choices.
