Members of a Senate committee have said that Pakistan could save up to Rs. 5 trillion every year by removing unnecessary federal ministries and reducing government spending.
The comments were made during a meeting of the Senate Functional Committee on Devolution, which was chaired by Senator Zamir Hussain. During the meeting, committee members reviewed the implementation of the 18th Constitutional Amendment, which gave more powers and responsibilities to the provincial governments.
The committee discussed whether the transfer of powers to the provinces has been carried out properly and if more steps are needed to complete the process.
Members said that the federal government should focus only on the responsibilities assigned to it under the Constitution, while provincial governments should manage matters that fall under their authority.
The meeting also included discussions on plans to restructure the federal government by reducing the number of ministries. Committee members believed that removing ministries that are no longer needed could help cut unnecessary expenses and improve the overall efficiency of the government.
According to the committee, these changes could lead to annual savings of up to Rs. 5 trillion, which could then be used for important sectors such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and public welfare.
The members stressed the importance of following the Constitution while making administrative reforms. They said that a smaller and more efficient federal government would help improve governance, reduce wasteful spending, and ensure that public resources are used more effectively.
The committee is expected to continue reviewing these proposals as part of its efforts to strengthen devolution and improve the functioning of the government.
