A major farmers’ protest is being planned as growers across Pakistan raise concerns about the increasing financial burden of agriculture. The Pakistan Kissan Ittehad (PKI) has announced that it will organise a “Million March” toward Rawalpindi from September 25, with the resignation of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz among its main demands.
The farmers’ group says the situation has become increasingly difficult for people who depend on agriculture for their livelihoods. Rising prices of fertiliser, electricity and other farming requirements have increased production expenses, while farmers are struggling to secure better returns from their crops.
Wheat remains another major concern for the protesting farmers. PKI representatives have pointed to problems surrounding wheat procurement and said that lower crop yields have further affected growers’ incomes. According to the group, these challenges have left many farmers facing financial losses instead of earning enough to cover their investment.
The organisation has also questioned the effectiveness of existing agricultural policies and subsidies. Farmer representatives are seeking stronger government measures that can reduce their financial burden and provide greater support to the agriculture sector.
The upcoming march is expected to bring farmers together to press their demands and draw greater attention to the difficulties facing the farming community. PKI leaders have called on the authorities to respond to their concerns and take practical steps to address the problems.
The September 25 march remains a planned protest at this stage. Its scale and impact will depend on participation from farmers and the response from government authorities.
