Punjab Food Authority to Introduce Star Ratings for Restaurants

The Punjab Food Authority is set to introduce a star rating system for restaurants across the province. The programme will grade eateries on cleanliness, hygiene, food quality and overall standards to help people choose safer options to eat.

Officials said the new Star Rating App will assess restaurants on several points, including food portion sizes and the dining environment. Ratings will be shown clearly at restaurant entrances so customers can check them before ordering. A pilot has already started in Lahore covering 25 restaurants and their 87 branches.

The plan also includes placing cameras inside kitchens with live screens in dining areas. This will let customers see food preparation in real time. People will be able to submit their own ratings through the app based on their experience, though officials stressed that fake reviews will be monitored carefully.

The system aims to create healthy competition among restaurants and encourage better hygiene practices. It forms part of wider digital efforts by the Food Safety and Consumer Protection Department to improve food safety under the Punjab government’s vision.
