The federal government’s fuel spending for official vehicles rose sharply to Rs21.8 billion in FY2024-25, according to figures presented in the National Assembly by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. The amount was 39% higher than the previous year, showing a rise of Rs6.1 billion in annual fuel costs.
The amount was also higher than the Rs16 billion allocated for fuel in the annual budget. The government therefore spent Rs5.8 billion more than the approved allocation.
The figures also show that fuel costs have remained a major expense over the past five years. Between FY2021 and FY2025, the federal government spent around Rs69 billion on fuel. Of this, Rs16 billion was spent during the PTI government, while most of the remaining amount was incurred during the tenure of the Shehbaz Sharif government, including the caretaker period.
The government had introduced a transport monetisation policy to control vehicle-related costs for senior officers, but the rise in fuel spending has raised questions about its implementation.
