The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has approved free BRT travel for citizens aged 60 and above under the Ehsaas Buzurg Card programme.
The initiative will allow eligible senior citizens to use BRT buses without paying fares, with the provincial government expected to bear an annual cost of around Rs935 million.
Beneficiaries will be verified through the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA), while the cards are expected to be issued within five months.
The programme is aimed at making public transportation more affordable and accessible for elderly citizens. Free travel could help seniors manage their daily journeys more easily while reducing the financial burden associated with regular transportation.
The initiative also focuses on providing senior citizens with a more convenient and dignified way to travel across the city. Authorities have introduced measures to prevent misuse of the facility. A Rs500 penalty will be imposed if an Ehsaas Buzurg Card is misused.
The government is presenting the programme as part of its broader public-welfare efforts and a move to support vulnerable sections of society. By covering the cost of BRT journeys for eligible residents, the provincial government hopes to encourage greater use of public transport among senior citizens.
The scheme is expected to provide long-term support to elderly residents while making everyday mobility more affordable and convenient.
