An Astore Markhor hunting permit has been auctioned for nearly Rs10 crore in Gilgit-Baltistan, reflecting the high value of the region’s rare wildlife under its trophy hunting programme.
The permit was sold for around Rs9.95 crore during the 2026-27 auction organised by the Gilgit-Baltistan Department of Wildlife and Parks.
Three Astore Markhor permits were offered during the auction, with the other two also attracting substantial bids. The department also auctioned hunting permits for blue sheep and Himalayan ibex as part of the same programme.
Officials expect the trophy hunting initiative to generate around Rs650 million in revenue during the current season. The hunting season is scheduled to run from October 15, 2026, to April 10, 2027.
The programme allows selected permits to be auctioned while generating revenue linked to wildlife management and conservation efforts in Gilgit-Baltistan.
The exceptionally high bid for the Astore Markhor permit has once again highlighted the monetary value associated with the region’s wildlife and the importance of managing trophy hunting under regulated programmes.
The revenue generated through the auctions is expected to contribute to the government’s broader wildlife management and conservation activities in the region.
