A 55-year-old paraglider, identified as Asif Mehmood from Wah Cantt, went missing during a flight from Zaini Pass in Upper Chitral on Thursday. The incident prompted a search operation in the mountainous area.
According to the Chitral Paragliding Association, Mehmood was flying with a six-member group that took off from Zaini Pass, located near the 7,708-metre Terichmir peak. Five members of the group landed safely after the flight, but Mehmood continued towards Chitral city.
The group remained in radio contact with him for about one and a half hours. However, communication was later lost, leaving his exact location unknown.
A 1122 search operation was launched after the loss of contact. Local teams and people familiar with the area were involved in efforts to trace the missing paraglider. The rugged terrain and changing weather conditions in the high-altitude region have made the search difficult.
Later on Friday, officials confirmed that Mehmood’s body was found in a highland pasture in Oveer Valley. The discovery ended the search for the missing paraglider and the body was shifted to the tehsil headquarters hospital in Booni, although details about the circumstances surrounding his death were still being established.
