Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a targeted petrol relief scheme offering a Rs100 per litre subsidy to motorcycle, rickshaw and small car users as fuel prices continue to rise.
Under the new scheme, motorcycle owners, rickshaw operators and users of other two and three-wheelers will receive Rs100 relief on up to 20 litres of petrol each month. This means eligible users can receive up to Rs2,000 in monthly support. Owners of cars with engines up to 800cc will qualify for the same relief on up to 30 litres, giving them a maximum benefit of Rs3,000 per month.
The government has started registration for the scheme from September 13. According to reports, the relief will begin in Islamabad from midnight on September 15, while the rollout across the rest of Pakistan is scheduled to start from September 17.
The announcement comes after several increases in domestic fuel prices. Petrol prices have risen sharply in recent weeks amid higher international oil prices and tensions affecting global energy supplies.
The government said the targeted support is intended to reduce the burden on people who depend on motorcycles, rickshaws and small vehicles for daily travel and work.
