The Punjab government has barred the newly appointed vice chancellors of five public sector medical universities from carrying out private medical practice during their four-year terms.
The restriction is part of new appointment conditions introduced under amendments to the laws governing Punjab’s medical universities. The government has also obtained a 13-point undertaking from the newly appointed VCs before issuing their appointment notifications.
The five VCs are Professor Mahmood Ayaz of King Edward Medical University, retired Maj Gen Sohail Sabir of the University of Health Sciences, retired Maj Gen Sohail Amin of Rawalpindi Medical University, Professor Syed Asghar Naqi of Faisalabad Medical University and Professor Zohra Khanum of Fatima Jinnah Medical University.
Under the undertaking, they cannot provide paid medical services at clinics, hospitals, diagnostic centres, laboratories or other facilities. They are also barred from receiving consultancy fees, commissions, honorariums or other benefits linked to private medical work.
The VCs have further agreed not to hold other professional or administrative positions without required approval and must avoid conflicts of interest. Any violation could lead to disciplinary action, removal from office or cancellation of the appointment, according to the terms.
