The Pakistan Army has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with US-based drone company Powerus, which includes an initial order for unmanned aerial systems.
Powerus co-founder Brett Velicovich confirmed the agreement on September 16, but details about the number of drones, their type and the financial value of the order have not been disclosed. He said the information was being kept confidential because of security concerns.
The development followed a meeting between a Powerus delegation and Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi. According to the Inter-Services Public Relations, the meeting covered defence procurement, production and long-term capacity building. The military’s statement, however, did not mention the MoU or initial order.
Powerus supplies aerial and maritime drones for military and industrial uses. The company is also exploring the possibility of developing or producing drone technology in Pakistan as part of a future joint technology relationship.
The deal comes as Pakistan and the United States work to strengthen defence and economic ties. Powerus is expected to merge with US-listed Aureus Greenway Holdings in October. The company is backed through an investment fund linked to Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump, although Powerus and Trump Jr.’s representatives have said they had no role in negotiating the Pakistan deal.
