Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced free travel on the province’s green electric buses for women, students, senior citizens and people with disabilities.
She made the announcement on September 17 while inaugurating the electric bus service in Multan. The service has started with 60 buses, while another 100 buses are expected to be added in the coming days.
The regular fare for the service has been set at Rs20. However, eligible passengers from the four groups will not have to pay the fare. Senior citizens aged 60 and above are included in the free travel facility.
Maryam said the Punjab government plans to expand electric bus services across the province. The government is targeting 3,000 electric buses by June 2027, including 1,500 buses planned for 91 tehsils from January next year. Another 1,100 buses have also been ordered for smaller districts and regional headquarters.
The buses are part of Punjab’s wider public transport plans, aimed at providing low-cost travel while shifting towards cleaner transport. The Multan launch adds another city to the province’s expanding electric bus network.
