The United States has approved a potential $24.3 billion sale of F-35 fighter jets to Saudi Arabia, marking a major step in the kingdom’s efforts to modernise its air force. The US State Department notified Congress about the proposed deal on September 17, 2026.
The package includes 48 Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II aircraft, 49 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines, communications equipment, spare parts, training and other support items. The F-35 is a fifth-generation fighter known for its stealth capabilities and advanced sensors.
However, the deal is not final yet. The proposal must go through a 30 day review period in the US Congress, which can block the sale. If completed, Saudi Arabia would become the first Arab country to operate the F-35. Israel is currently the only Middle Eastern country operating the aircraft.
The proposed sale has also drawn attention because Washington is required to consider Israel’s military advantage when approving advanced weapons sales to countries in the region.
