Air travel in Pakistan could become more expensive after a sharp increase in jet fuel prices. The price of jet fuel has risen by Rs. 26.95 per litre to Rs. 376.76, adding pressure to airline operating costs.
The latest revision has also increased the prices of other petroleum products. Kerosene has gone up by Rs. 22.97 to Rs. 347.32 per litre, while light diesel has increased by Rs. 25.23 to Rs. 304.78 per litre.
Pakistan State Oil’s records show that JP-1, the jet fuel used by aircraft, was priced at Rs. 329.35 per litre on September 11. It increased to Rs. 349.81 by September 18, showing how quickly fuel costs have been changing this month.
The increases come as global energy markets face pressure from the conflict and supply disruptions in the Gulf region. Reuters reported that Pakistan has introduced a fuel relief scheme to help reduce the impact of higher transport fuel costs.
Fuel is one of the biggest expenses for airlines. Higher jet fuel costs can therefore raise operating expenses and may put pressure on ticket prices. However, any increase in airfares will also depend on routes, fuel consumption, exchange rates and other airline costs.
