Mobile phone and internet services will be suspended in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and parts of Attock on September 26 and 27, according to reports published on September 23. The move comes as authorities step up security ahead of a planned Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest in Islamabad on September 27.
The decision covers the twin cities and selected areas of Attock. Reports said the Punjab Home Department had approached the federal government regarding restrictions on mobile and internet services in sensitive locations, including parts of Rawalpindi and Attock.
Some locations along major routes have also been identified for connectivity restrictions. These include Taxila City, Wah Saddar, Thallian, Chakri and other points near important motorway routes. The measures may include suspension or downgrading of mobile data services.
The communication restrictions are being introduced alongside wider security arrangements. Motorway M-1, M-14 and parts of the GT Road have also been closed at different points, according to the National Highways and Motorway Police.
Authorities have said the measures are linked to maintaining law and order during the expected movement of protest participants toward Islamabad. Punjab has also imposed Section 144 across the province from September 23 to October 5, banning public gatherings and processions.
