The Punjab government has approved the establishment of a 268-bed Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cardiology in Gujranwala, as part of efforts to expand specialised heart care in the province.
The approval was given during a meeting chaired by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on September 26, 2026. The new institute will provide specialised cardiac treatment to people in Gujranwala and nearby areas, reducing the need for patients to travel to larger cities for treatment.
The project had earlier been reported as a major healthcare development for the Gujranwala division. Punjab Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafique said the institute would be equipped with modern medical equipment, specialist doctors and facilities designed around patients. Earlier estimated project cost was around Rs16 billion, while a later government briefing put the cost at Rs17 billion.
The government is also working to improve the Wazirabad Institute of Cardiology in the Gujranwala region.
