Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with the Portugal national team has come under fresh scrutiny following a growing dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus.
Reports from Portugal claim the veteran forward does not want to return to the national team while Jesus remains in charge. The reported stance comes after Ronaldo left Portugal’s training camp following a disagreement over his playing time.
Ronaldo later issued a lengthy statement explaining his side of the dispute. He accused Jesus of breaking his word over an agreement regarding his playing time and said the coach later failed to follow through on a separate understanding about how the situation would be explained publicly. Jesus has denied making such an agreement.
Despite the tension, Ronaldo has not announced his retirement from international football. He apologised to his teammates and Portuguese supporters for leaving the camp and said he would remain available for selection after serving any punishment imposed by the Portuguese Football Federation.
The 41-year-old remains Portugal’s captain and all-time leading scorer, with 146 international goals. His departure from the camp followed his unused-substitute appearance against Norway and came before Portugal’s match against Denmark.
With the disagreement between Ronaldo and Jesus still unresolved, attention is now focused on whether the two will work together again. Portugal’s upcoming international fixtures could provide a clearer picture of Ronaldo’s next step with the national team.
