Pakistan and the United Kingdom have discussed possible arrangements involving Airbus aircraft and Rolls Royce engines for PIA as part of efforts to modernise the national carrier’s fleet.
The discussions also included the possibility of UK export credit support for future aircraft-related transactions. Leasing options were considered as a way to address PIA’s immediate fleet requirements, while longer-term aircraft purchases could be explored separately.
The matter was discussed during a meeting between Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and British High Commissioner Jane Marriott. The talks focused on strengthening cooperation in aviation and exploring financial options that could support PIA’s fleet expansion and renewal.
During the meeting, the commerce minister highlighted the commercial value of PIA’s direct international routes. He also stressed the importance of improving passenger services, operational reliability and aircraft availability to rebuild confidence among travellers.
Fleet modernisation has become an important part of PIA’s efforts to improve its operations and strengthen its position in international markets. Bringing additional aircraft into service could help the airline expand capacity while improving reliability on key routes.
The discussions with the UK are part of broader efforts to explore financing and commercial partnerships for PIA. Leasing could provide a quicker solution for immediate requirements, while direct purchases may offer a longer-term approach to fleet development.
Further details on the proposed aircraft, financing arrangements and export credit support are expected to depend on subsequent negotiations between the relevant authorities and companies.
