India’s 2036 Olympic Dream Faces Questions Over Basic Needs and Human Development

India’s ambition to host the 2036 Olympic Games has sparked debate over whether greater attention should first be given to the challenges faced by its citizens.

According to the UNDP’s 2025 Human Development Report, India ranks 130th out of 193 countries. Concerns also remain over air pollution, hunger, access to affordable healthcare, sanitation and public safety.

The country’s Olympic ambitions have also prompted questions about minority rights and women’s safety. As India pursues its goal of hosting a major global sporting event, discussions continue over how it can balance international ambitions with the well-being, dignity and basic needs of its people.

Hosting the Olympics is a major responsibility that requires strong infrastructure, public safety and effective planning. Addressing these challenges alongside improving living standards could help India build a stronger case for hosting the 2036 Games.
