Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has reportedly been arrested following the imposition of emergency and governor’s rule in the province on October 11, 2026. The reported arrest was claimed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, while the federal government had not issued an official confirmation at the time of reporting.
PTI’s provincial president, Junaid Akbar, also claimed that he had been arrested. The developments came amid rising tensions between the federal government and the PTI-led provincial administration.
President Asif Ali Zardari approved the federal cabinet’s recommendations to impose emergency measures under Articles 232 and 234 of Pakistan’s Constitution. The federal government cited security concerns and what it described as a lack of cooperation from the provincial government in the fight against terrorism.
The move followed a PTI-led march towards Islamabad, with party supporters demanding the release of former prime minister Imran Khan. PTI leaders have condemned the emergency measures, calling them an attack on the province’s democratic mandate and constitutional rights.
The situation remains politically sensitive, and the reported arrests have yet to receive official confirmation from the federal government.
