A total of 81 tons of donkey meat, bones and hides have been exported to China from Gwadar, Pakistan, on October 5.
The three consignments, each weighing 27 tons net, were shipped by Hangeng, a Chinese company operating in Gwadar North Free Zone, after completing the required standards checks, customs clearance and export procedures. The donkey meat was transported frozen by sea.
Under agreed protocols, the facility follows a policy allowing products to leave the Gwadar Free Zone only by air or sea, preventing by-products from entering Pakistan’s domestic market.
Pakistan’s first modern donkey slaughterhouse built under Chinese leadership was completed last year at a cost of $50 million.
China has demand for donkey meat and hides, with donkey hides used to produce ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicinal product. Pakistan has approximately 5.8 million donkeys.
