Pakistan’s federal government reportedly agreed to arrange a meeting between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and selected representatives before emergency rule was imposed in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP).
According to a report published by ARY News on October 12, government representatives held contact with PTI leaders before the emergency announcement. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi reportedly agreed to facilitate access to Khan under the rules governing prison visits.
Sources said the government informed PTI that one family member and one lawyer could meet the former prime minister. The proposal came amid political tensions and efforts to reach an understanding between the federal government and the party.
During PTI’s political and core committee meetings, Mashal Yousafzai was proposed as the lawyer who would meet Khan. However, reports said objections within the party emerged over her nomination, leading her to withdraw her name. Bushra Bibi’s daughter was reportedly suggested as the family representative.
The developments came as President Asif Ali Zardari declared an emergency in KP on October 11, suspending the PTI-led provincial government. Federal officials said the decision followed concerns about security and counterterrorism cooperation, while PTI opposed the move.
