Ancient Stories Carved in Stone: From China’s Helan Mountains to Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan

This remarkable rock carving, known as the Sun God, is one of the most iconic examples of ancient rock art in the Helan Mountains, located in northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region.

With its distinctive facial features and radiating lines, the carving is believed to reflect ancient people’s worship of the sun. It is part of a vast collection of rock art depicting human faces, animals, hunting scenes and spiritual rituals, offering a fascinating glimpse into life thousands of years ago.

Interestingly, Pakistan is home to a rich tradition of ancient rock art as well. Thousands of carvings and inscriptions can be found along the Upper Indus River in Gilgit-Baltistan, preserving valuable traces of ancient civilizations, beliefs and cultural exchanges.

Separated by vast mountain ranges, these ancient carvings in China and Pakistan tell a shared human story — our ancestors’ desire to record their lives, express their beliefs and leave a mark for future generations.
